Most people associate exercise with weight loss, but not all exercise is the same when it comes to burning fat cells. Exercise alone will not burn fat cells. How often have you or someone you know started an exercise program only to be discouraged at the results? For real and lasting results, we must alkalize, hydrate, get good nutrition AND get the right type of muscle maintenance exercise. It is the first three that will make exercise have the greatest impact on the body.
Some aerobic exercise...running, swimming, biking, etc is good for us, and for our hearts and lungs, but only burns calories while you’re doing it.
Many of the activities that have been recommended as exercise by so-called "experts" in this field will do little or nothing to help build muscle mass, and in some cases may even cause serious harm. Jogging, dance aerobics, and other high-force, high-impact, steady-state activities are examples of this.
"All the aerobics activity and interest promoted within the fitness industry since the late 1960's has not fostered any long-term vascular health. Instead, it has caused an epidemic of joint and spine injury." - Ellington Darden, PhD
When taken too far aerobic exercise can cause a loss of muscle, and can prevent your body from producing the increases in muscular strength and size stimulated during strength training. Your muscles are what burns calories and fat, even while you sleep.
Strength training (exercise that increases muscular strength) increases the amount of calories your body burns all the time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As your muscles are broken down during training, they continue to repair for days, and your metabolism is naturally increased. Also, research from Tufts has indicated that every pound of muscle added to the body of an adult human increases caloric expenditure by an average of 50 calories per day. If one gains 5 pounds of muscle, which most people can achieve in a matter of weeks, that same person will be burning an extra 250 calories a day for doing nothing more than owning that muscle!
To maintain ideal weight, it is important NOT to reduce calories to the point where the body begins to burn muscle for fuel. Remember that muscle is our best friend when it comes to turning fat cells into energy. Reducing calories is important but so is keeping the muscle we already have.
