AntiOxidants

What is an antioxidant? (anti-oxidant)

You may have heard about the health benefits of antioxidants, but do you know what an antioxidant is and how they actually work?

Antioxidants include enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dimutase that your body produces naturally, and dietary supplements including Vitamins C, E, and A, beta carotene, and coenzyme Q10, that you get from the food you eat - the best sources being fruits and vegetables. These prevent damage to your cells or repair damage that has been done.

What do antioxidants do?

Antioxidants work by significantly slowing or preventing the oxidative damage or damage from oxygen. This process is caused by substances called free radicals (unstable cells) and can lead to cell dysfunction and the onset of problems like heart disease and diabetes. Antioxidants may also improve immune function and perhaps lower your risk for infection and cancer, and slow the aging process.

In your body, the antioxidant process is similar to stopping an apple from browning. Once you cut an apple, it begins to brown, but if you dip it in orange juice, an antioxidant (measures -250 on an ORP meter), it stays white. Remember that all food liquids that have a negative Oxygen Reduction Potential (ORP) number are considered antioxidants. The reason that they hold a negative charge is that they have an extra electron (electrons are negative, protons are positive).

How do antioxidants neutralize free radicals?

Antioxidants reduce oxidation because the negative ions (that negative ORP number) attract the positive ions (all free radicals hold a positive charge). Those same negatively charged antioxidant ions bind to the positive free radical ions (acid, toxins, etc) and neutralize them, making the free radicals stable and thus, no longer a free radical at all.

Mostly all of natures fresh foods, especially fruits and vegetables , are natural antioxidants. Some of the highest antioxidant Superfoods are grapes, garlic, spinach, berries, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli and whole grains because they are rich in nutrients and vitamins mentioned above. Taking chemically reproduced vitamins is not the same as getting these vitamins from foods naturally rich in them . This is why it is so important to eat 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. more on antioxidant rich superfoods
